How Much Collagen Should You Take Per Day?

How Much Collagen Should You Take Per Day?

A balanced diet the best way to fulfill your body’s nutritional needs. However, some nutrients are difficult to consume through food. Supplements are a great addition to your diet to provide the nutrients that are trickier to intake. In recent years, collagen supplementation, which provides an array of benefits, has seen a rise in popularity. Collagen protein is a nutrient not typically found in our day-to-day diets.

For much of our lives, collagen is produced by our bodies for a variety of functions. As we age, our body’s ability to synthesize collagen decreases, and we see the effects like wrinkles, thinning hair, and aching joints.

Luckily, you can add collagen supplements to your daily routine easily.

How Much Collagen to Use Each Day

As with other nutrients, the exact amount of collagen people need will vary from person to person. For example, a teenager whose collagen production is at peak levels does not have to take as much collagen per day to keep their skin healthy. On the other hand, a middle-aged person whose body makes less collagen will benefit from taking more collagen each day.

Start with the recommended dose of 10grams of Indigo Marine Collagen per day. It should provide plenty of peptides for your desired results. Studies in which participants took 10grams of collagen have shown notable increases in skin moisture and elasticity. You can be confident in those results.

Can You Take Too Much Collagen Per Day?

10grams of collagen is likely all your skin, hair, and nails will need, but it might seem reasonable to take more collagen for better results. In some cases, ingesting more of a nutrient than is recommended is dangerous. Vitamin A can cause bone thinning, liver damage, and other side effects if taken too much, even though it is beneficial in lower amounts. On the other hand, you can take more than the recommended daily value of water-soluble vitamin C and be fine.

Based on the available evidence, collagen is a safe substance for almost everyone, even at several times the recommended dose. For instance, Indigo Collagen recommends taking 10grams per day, but there have been studies in which participants have taken as much as 30 grams of collagen and have been fine.

More collagen doesn’t always mean more noticeable results. At a certain point, your body may acquire leftover collagen peptides, which will go to waste. Overall, it’s a good idea to stick to the manufacturer’s recommended dose. If you want to go above the recommended dosage, talk to your doctor first.

What Type of Collagen Should You Take?

About 90% of the collagen in our bodies is type 1. The rest is mostly made up of types 2 through 5. The type of collagen you take determines the effects you see. Since type 1 collagen is what makes up most of your skin, it is typically the main element of collagen supplements. Additionally, type 2 collagen is known for promoting joint health.

The source of the collagen also makes a difference, especially for environmental concerns. Much of the collagen available in supplement form today is derived from cows, chickens, and pigs, which are known to contribute to greenhouse gas emissions.  Instead of cows or pigs, Indigo sources marine collagen from the wild-caught North Atlantic white fish. Not only does this avoid the antibiotics and artificial hormones found in many farm animals, but it is better for the planet, too.
